Endometriosis: How Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine May Help

July 1, 2026

Endometriosis is a common gynecological condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterine cavity. This tissue can respond to hormonal changes throughout the menstrual cycle, contributing to chronic inflammation, pelvic pain, scar tissue, cysts, nodules, and, in some cases, fertility challenges. Endometriosis affects an estimated 10% of women of reproductive age worldwide and can significantly impact quality of life.

While many people think of endometriosis as “bad period cramps,” the symptoms can be much broader. Common signs and symptoms may include:

  • Dysmenorrhea, which means painful menstrual cramps

  • Pelvic pain, especially before or during the menstrual period

  • Dyspareunia, which means pain during or after intercourse

  • Pain with bowel movements or urination, especially around the period

  • Heavy bleeding, spotting between periods, bloating, nausea, fatigue, or digestive changes

  • Difficulty getting pregnant or unexplained infertility

Pelvic pain from endometriosis can feel dull, deep, cramping, sharp, or aching. It may begin a few days before the period and continue throughout menstruation, but some people also experience pain at other times of the month.

In Western medicine, treatment often focuses on reducing pain, suppressing the menstrual cycle, and slowing the activity of endometriosis tissue. Common options may include anti-inflammatory medications, birth control pills, progestins, hormonal IUDs, GnRH medications, and, when appropriate, surgery. Hormonal treatments can be very helpful for some patients, but they may not be suitable for everyone, especially those who are trying to conceive or those who experience significant side effects.

At ROOTS Mindful Acupuncture, we view endometriosis through both a modern and Traditional Chinese Medicine lens. TCM stands for Traditional Chinese Medicine, a medical system that includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, moxibustion, cupping, nutrition, and lifestyle support. In TCM, endometriosis is often understood as a condition involving impaired circulation, inflammation, and stagnation in the pelvic area. Treatment is highly individualized because each patient’s symptoms, cycle pattern, stress level, digestion, fertility goals, and overall constitution may be different.

Acupuncture may help support patients with endometriosis by calming the nervous system, improving pelvic circulation, reducing muscle tension, supporting hormonal regulation, and helping the body modulate pain and inflammation. From a practical perspective, many patients seek acupuncture for menstrual cramps, chronic pelvic pain, PMS, digestive discomfort around the period, stress, and fertility support.

Clinical research suggests that acupuncture may help reduce endometriosis-related pain and improve quality of life, although more large, high-quality studies are still needed. A 2023 systematic review found that acupuncture showed promise for improving pain and quality of life in people with endometriosis, and a 2024 review also reported that acupuncture may help improve endometriosis-associated pain.

A 2024 meta-analysis on Traditional Chinese Medicine and endometriosis reported that TCM approaches may be associated with better symptom management, improved pregnancy rates, lower spontaneous abortion rates, fewer adverse reactions, and better overall quality of life. The study also discussed acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping as therapies that may help reduce pain, support pelvic blood flow, and regulate inflammatory activity.

For patients who are also receiving Western medical care, acupuncture can be used as a supportive therapy alongside medical treatment. It does not replace diagnosis or care from a gynecologist, reproductive endocrinologist, or other medical provider. Instead, acupuncture offers a gentle, individualized approach that may help address the whole body: pain, inflammation, circulation, stress response, digestion, sleep, and reproductive health.

If you experience severe period pain, pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, or difficulty conceiving, it is important to know that these symptoms are not something you simply have to “push through.” At ROOTS Mindful Acupuncture, we support patients with compassionate, personalized care designed to help the body feel safer, calmer, and more balanced throughout the menstrual cycle.
