Acupuncture and Fertility: A Supportive Approach for Reproductive Health
July 24 2026

For many people trying to conceive, the fertility journey can be physically, emotionally, and mentally demanding. Whether you are trying to conceive naturally or undergoing assisted reproductive treatments such as IVF, you may be looking for safe, supportive ways to care for your reproductive health.
Acupuncture has become an increasingly popular addition to fertility care. Research suggests that it may play a supportive role in improving reproductive outcomes, especially when used alongside conventional fertility treatments.
Acupuncture Around Embryo Transfer
One well-known study, published in Fertility and Sterility in 2002, looked at 160 women undergoing assisted reproductive therapy, also known as ART.
In this study, researchers compared two groups of women: one group received acupuncture immediately before and after embryo transfer, while the other group did not receive acupuncture.
The results showed that women who received acupuncture had a clinical pregnancy rate of 42.5%, compared with 26.3% in the control group. The researchers concluded that acupuncture may be a valuable complementary treatment for improving pregnancy rates after embryo transfer.
Research on Acupuncture and IVF Outcomes
In 2008, researchers published a systematic review and meta-analysis in the BMJ. This review analyzed seven randomized controlled trials involving more than 1,300 women undergoing IVF.
Overall, the review found that acupuncture performed around the time of embryo transfer was associated with:
Higher clinical pregnancy rates
Increased ongoing pregnancy rates
Improved live birth rates
The overall evidence suggested that acupuncture may provide meaningful support when combined with IVF treatment.
Acupuncture and Uterine Blood Flow
Another way acupuncture may support fertility is by improving blood flow to the reproductive organs.
A study published in Human Reproduction looked at infertile women who had increased resistance to blood flow in the uterine arteries. This type of blood flow resistance may affect the uterine environment, which is important for implantation and early pregnancy.
In the study, participants received electroacupuncture twice a week for four weeks. After treatment, researchers found a significant reduction in uterine artery blood flow resistance.
The researchers suggested that acupuncture may help regulate the nervous system by reducing sympathetic activity, which is often associated with stress. By calming this stress-related response, acupuncture may help improve circulation to the uterus.
Healthy blood flow is considered important for creating a uterine environment that can support implantation and early pregnancy.
A Holistic Approach to Fertility Support
Fertility is influenced by many factors, including age, hormone balance, reproductive health, lifestyle, stress, and overall wellness.
Acupuncture offers a holistic approach that focuses on supporting the body’s natural balance. Rather than replacing conventional reproductive medicine, acupuncture can work alongside fertility care to support circulation, nervous system regulation, stress response, and overall reproductive health.
For individuals and couples navigating the fertility journey, acupuncture may offer gentle, individualized support during a time that can often feel overwhelming.
