How Acupuncture Helps You Recover from Sports Injuries

Whether you’re a competitive athlete, a weekend runner, or just love staying active, an injury can stop you in your tracks. Sprains, strains, tendon problems, and overuse injuries bring pain, stiffness, and a frustratingly slow recovery. Acupuncture can be a valuable part of getting you back in motion.

How acupuncture reduces pain

Acupuncture works with your body’s own systems in three main ways:

  • It calms pain signals. Fine needles stimulate sensory nerves, which prompts the body to release its natural pain relievers, such as endorphins, and changes how pain signals travel to the brain.

  • It helps regulate inflammation. Inflammation is part of healing, but when it lingers it causes ongoing pain and slows recovery. A 2026 review in the Journal of Pain Research describes how acupuncture influences communication between the nervous and immune systems (called neuro-immune regulation). This includes affecting immune cells called macrophages, which help shift the body from inflammation toward tissue repair.

  • It relaxes muscles and improves circulation. Acupuncture can ease tight, spasming muscles and increase blood flow to injured tissue, delivering what it needs to heal.

Benefits for sports injuries

A review of acupuncture use in athletes found it has been applied to a wide range of injuries, including:

  • Ankle sprains

  • Achilles tendon pain

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Shoulder pain and impingement

  • Tennis elbow

  • Low back pain

  • Muscle strains and tendon injuries

Because it can be used both soon after an injury and throughout rehabilitation, acupuncture fits alongside physical therapy and other care. Patients often find it helps them:

  • Feel less pain and move more freely

  • Rely less on pain medication

  • Recover function and return to training and daily activities sooner
